One skincare trend that has exploded recently is the oil cleansing method. Yup, you read it right – oil – and our faces are thanking us for it!

If the idea of washing your face in oil has you nervous, though, you’re not alone. The oil cleansing method seems counterintuitive for many, especially those struggling with oily skin or acne. The last thing you want is more oil on your skin, right? However, it is actually those people that the oil cleansing method may hold the most benefits for.

Benefits of the oil cleansing method

Struggling with oily skin, acne, dry patches, or milia? Interested in trying the oil cleansing method but scared to start? Here are some of the benefits of the oil cleansing method, and why we think everyone should give it a try!

  1. Oil dissolves oil. Remember in third grade science class when you tried to mix oil and water, and watched the oil sink? Turns out we’ve found a use for that lesson plan! Oil actually absorbs oil. If you struggle with oily skin, it makes sense to use the oil cleansing method because your oil cleanser will absorb the oil that gets stuck and hardened in your skin’s pores. Water or alcohol based cleansers just can’t say the same.

  2. Oil doesn’t strip your skin. You’ve probably used a cleanser before that made your skin feel tight after using it. In fact, this may have led to the common cycle of cleansers, toners, and moisturizers, all to balance out each previous step. With the oil cleansing method, the impurities in your skin are dissolved, but your skin’s natural hydration is left intact. You may find that you don’t even need to use moisturizer after cleansing!

  3. Oil cleansing cuts out harsh chemicals. If you’re wanting to cut out toxic ingredients and endocrine disruptors from your beauty routine, the oil cleansing method is a great nontoxic solution. Unlike foaming cleansers, oil cleansers contain no surfactants. A surfactant is the foaming agent found in all foaming cleansers – the same agent found in detergent and household cleaners! Instead, oil cleansers combine the nutrients of natural oils to best serve your skin, for a long-term solution.

My personal experience with the oil cleansing method

Personally, I have been using the oil cleansing method for three months and only wish I found it sooner! Currently, I only oil cleanse at night. My cleansing routine has transformed from a nightly chore to a short time for self-care. I really look forward to oil cleansing, not just for the results but also for the yummy smell of the oils!  But the results… now, they’re worth mentioning. My skin never feels tight after oil cleansing. It always feels balanced and fresh after the oil cleansing method – there is no better way to phrase it!
