How to Have Good Mental Health: Our Top Tips
The key to a good life is good mental health. But… how to have good mental health is the big question. Many of us struggle with our mental health at one time or another, whether that’s with anxiety, depression, another mental disorder, or just generalized stress. Hectic lifestyles and big events such as a death in the family, a work deadline, a breakup, or more can cause dips in mental health.
4 Tips on How to Have Good Mental Health
Don’t wait for a reason to work on your mental health. You can always cultivate better mental health, whether you are having a particularly hard time or not. Here are some of our top tips on how to have good mental health.
1. Eat well
What you put in your body can have a massive impact on all areas of your health, including your mental health. Did you know that more than 90% of serotonin (the happy neurotransmitter!) is produced in the gut? Feed your gut and your brain with fresh and healthy foods, such as anti-inflammatory fruits, veggies, nuts, and legumes.
2. Learn to say no
Sometimes it is hard to say no, but overcommitting yourself and engaging in things you don’t enjoy will have a poor impact on your mental health. Learning to say no is not about being negative. It is about learning to value your own time and wellbeing and make yourself a priority.
3. Don’t disconnect
On that note, learn to say no but don’t disconnect completely. Your social support system can be a fabulous tool as you work on your mental health. Make time to meet a friend for coffee, chat on the phone, or even just send a letter. Talking about your feelings and your struggle with someone who cares about you can make a big difference.
Exercising regularly is one of the best things you can do for your mental health. When you exercise, your body produces endorphins, which make you feel invigorated and happy. Studies even show that regular exercise can reduce stress and depression. Setting up a routine will help you exercise even on low mental health days. Sign up for a race, or a strength training class, or find a yoga teacher you love and go to their classes weekly.
